Oak, Ash or Pine? Choosing the Right Wood for Your Skirting Boards

Choosing the wood is one of the first decisions when you order skirting boards and architraves. Here is a straightforward guide to the three we supply, so you can pick with confidence.

Prime European Oak

Oak is our top grade wood. It has a distinctive grain that adds character to a room and it glues, stains and finishes well. It suits period homes, stained or oiled finishes, and anyone who wants the look of real oak. If you like a more rustic feel, our Character Oak has extra knots and cracks and is slightly lighter in colour.

Prime American Ash

Ash is another prime grade hardwood with an attractive, open grain. It is a good alternative when you want the quality of a hardwood with a different look to oak.

Unsorted Grade Softwood Pine

Pine is our most affordable option. It has more knots, which some people prefer for the added character, and it is ideal for painting, varnishing or staining. We supply it unfinished but machine smooth, ready for your chosen finish. If you are on a tighter budget there is also 5ths grade softwood, one grade below unsorted grade.

Which should you choose?

  • Painting everything white? Pine is usually all you need.
  • Staining or oiling to show the grain? Oak or ash will give the best result.
  • Period property or high ceilings? Look at our taller profiles in a classic mould such as Chatsworth or Manor House.
